Medieval architecture, mechanical nativity scenes and the House of Tapestries: The best of South Bohemia in Jindřichův Hradec
The third-largest castle complex in the Czech Republic, a wonderfully preserved city centre, a national urban monument, fascinating mechanical nativity scenes and a tapestry manufacturer boasting a hundred years of tradition - all this and more can be found within the town of Jindřichův Hradec, a former medieval city and castle in the south of Bohemia. The castle complex covers 3.5 hectares and houses many historical interiors, including the late-Gothic Black Kitchen and the murals of the Knight’s Hall. The Museum of Jindřichův Hradec is ready to introduce to you one of the world’s largest artisan mechanical nativity scenes, called ‘Krýza’s Nativity,’ which was listed in the Guinness Book of Records. The museum also offers a pearl of South Bohemian Gothic architecture, the Church of St. John the Baptist.
After visiting the museum and enjoying a light lunch, you can admire another local tradition - the art of tapestry making - at the House of Tapestries’ Weaving Crafts Centre, located in a former brewery. Find out more about this unique craftsmanship and about the town of Jindřichův Hradec on our exciting excursion.
