Hradec Králové: City of Czech queens and Salon of the Republic
Hradec Králové, one of the oldest and most historically significant Czech cities, is home to countless monuments from the Middle Ages to the 20th century. Hradec Králové used to be a dowry town of Czech queens, and during the golden period of Czechoslovakia – the 1920s and 1930s – it was remodelled by renowned Czech architects Jan Kotěra and Josef Gočár, whose elaborate urban plans created a modern and progressive place to live. At the time, numerous monumental edifices were built in the Art Nouveau and Functionalist styles, and so the city came to be known as the Salon of the Republic.
Get acquainted with Hradec Králové’s history in cooperation with the Museum of Eastern Bohemia and its experts. Upon arrival you can enjoy a scholar-led tour within the newly restored museum campus, which strives to meet the most modern museum standards – similar to those found in Vienna and other European cities. Then take a walk through the streets of Hradec Králové to admire its medieval and modern architecture as well as its layout. The walks are led by the director of the museum and by the scholars specialised in history of arts and architecture. You will have a chance to try out the most modern apps developed especially for the Museum of Eastern Bohemia.
After lunch, our bus will take you to the War of 1866 Museum to commemorate the battle which took place near Hradec Králové – one of the largest in European history.
