A fairy tale in South Bohemia: Neo-Gothic Hluboká Chateau and the Aleš South Bohemian Gallery
Picture a castle like from a fairy tale, perched on top of a steep hill and surrounded by well-maintained gardens... that is the Neo-Gothic Hluboká nad Vltavou State Chateau, originally a manor house owned by one of the most important European noble families, the Schwarzenbergs. The family found inspiration for the chateau’s architecture mainly in Great Britain, and namely at Windsor Castle! The chateau’s interiors are richly decorated with wood carvings, paintings by 16th–18th century European masters, chandeliers, stained glass and pottery. Additionally, a wonderfully preserved kitchen complete with kitchenware tells visitors much about the noble lifestyle of the 19th century.
After our chateau visit, we’ll have the opportunity to get some exercise while climbing up the castle tower for a great view. A light lunch will follow, taking place in the estate’s former orangery. After lunch, experts from the Aleš South Bohemian Gallery will accompany us through the numerous exhibitions of contemporary Czech art that the gallery has to offer.
