Along the Vltava: The birthplace of Antonin Dvořák, House of Lobkowicz’s Castle Nelahozeves and the Central Bohemian Museum in Roztoky
Take a trip to the north of Prague along the peacefully meandering Vltava River to discover the places where Prague’s citizens used to get away for the summer.
Our first stop is a little town called Roztoky, formerly one of the first summer resorts for Praguers. This place is home to the Central Bohemian Museum in Roztoky, which houses extensive collections of various artefacts including a brand new archaeological exhibition that will be introduced to you exclusively by its curators.
Next, you will continue further down the river to a little village called Nelahozeves – the birthplace of one of the most famous Czech composers, Antonín Dvořák. Dvořák is best known as the genius behind the New World Symphony.
Nelahozeves is also home to a striking castle which belongs to the House of Lobkowicz – one of few noble names today that is still connected with extensive collections of arts, musical manuscripts, rare books and other objects of cultural heritage. Due to historical turbulence in Central Europe, the collections were confiscated twice during the 20th century – once by the Nazis and then again by the Communists. However, thanks to their hard work, the Lobkowicz family was able to reclaim and reassemble most of the collections during the 1990s. Nowadays, the House of Lobkowicz maintains over tens of thousands of objects, displayed mainly in Lobkowicz Palace within the Prague Castle complex and also in Nelahozeves.
Come with us to discover more about the collections and about the unique Lobkowicz Library, which will be introduced to you exclusively by its curator.
