Treasures of South Moravia: Ancient discoveries, the House of Liechtenstein and wine
The first settlers of the country we now call the Czech Republic were ancient Slavic tribes who arrived during the Migration Period. Today, thanks to numerous archaeological discoveries on their former sites, the hillforts, more light has been shed on the lifestyles and customs of these early Slavic people. A particularly rich archaeological site is located in Břeclav near a manor house called Pohansko, i.e. ‘the pagan place’ in reference to its ancient history. The site is located in the UNESCO-listed Lednice-Valtice Cultural Landscape, an exceptional complex of architectural landscapes and structures designed and built continuously for centuries by one noble family: The House of Liechtenstein.
In cooperation with the Municipal Museum and Gallery in Břeclav, we will first pay a visit to the archaeological exhibitions located within Pohansko Manor. Next, we’ll discover more cultural heritage via a visit to the Liechtensteins’ Valtice Castle. In order to understand the local heritage on a deeper level, the Valtice branch of the National Museum of Agriculture will welcome us with exhibitions focused not only on local nature, but also on the local wealth source – winemaking and viticulture. A wine tasting will close the day before our return to Brno.
