The Glass Room and beyond: Extraordinary villas in Brno
Brno’s quick journey towards modernism began in the 19th century when the city became the Austro-Hungarian Empire’s number one producer of textiles. Nicknamed ‘Moravian Manchester’ and having a straight railway connection to the Empire’s capital of Vienna, Brno didn’t have to wait long for a boom of new, modern houses for rich industrialists. These patrons could afford to hire progressive architects and could be very generous with their finances, allowing for the construction of such gems as Jurkovič Villa and Villa Löw-Beer. However, it was Ludwig Mies van der Rohe’s Villa Tugendhat which made it to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2001.
Experience a unique opportunity to explore the interiors of all three villas mentioned above on a guided tour with experts from the Brno City Museum, the Moravian Gallery and the Brno Region Museum. You will feel the inspiration that influenced famous artists like Simon Mawer and his novel The Glass Room, as well as many others from all around the world.
