The Glass Room and beyond: Extraordinary villas in Brno with scientific programme (2-day excursion)
Brno’s quick journey towards modernism started in the 19th century when the city became the Austro-Hungarian Empire’s number one producer of textiles. Nicknamed ‘Moravian Manchester’ and having a straight railway connection to the Empire’s capital of Vienna, Brno didn’t have to wait long for a boom of new, modern houses for rich industrialists. These patrons could afford to hire progressive new architects and could be very generous with their finances, allowing for the construction of such gems as Jurkovič Villa and Villa Löw-Beer. However, it was Ludwig Mies van der Rohe’s Villa Tugendhat which made it to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2001.
On our 2-day excursion, immerse yourself even deeper into the world of Brno’s villas with a seminar focused on the architecture, lifestyle and culture of the 19th and 20th centuries, which will take place in Villa Tugendhat upon your arrival in the city. Then, visit more beautiful locations which became iconic and rewrote the history of architecture: Villa Löw-Beer, Villa Stiassni, Arnold Villa and Jurkovič Villa. Experience this unique opportunity to explore the interiors of all the villas mentioned above on guided tours with experts from the Brno City Museum, the Brno Region Museum, the Moravian Gallery and the National Heritage Institute.
