Museums of Modern and Contemporary Art: Developing Strategies for Change and Empowerment
CIMAM (International Committee for Museums and Collections of Modern Art) presents the relevance and impact of museums of modern and contemporary art when they are understood, and managed, as agents of change for the development of societies worldwide. Following an introduction by CIMAM’s President, Mami Kataoka, on the Board’s initiatives undertaken to respond to the concerns and challenges faced by the professional community of CIMAM of almost 700 museum professionals from 86 countries, this session will present a diversity of 25+ case studies organized around core values endorsed by CIMAM. The aim is to showcase the vitality and capacity of fast transformation of museums of modern and contemporary art of all scales that act in the most diverse contexts all around the world. It will do so through a wide range of inspiring projects by museums that actively engage working with communities of living artists, and enact concrete change in the realms of education, social integration, health, and economic development, while they endorse crucial values such as freedom, equality, inclusion, accessibility, and sustainability. By offering examples of actions developed by today´s museums of modern and contemporary art, this panel discussion will give an overview of the dynamism and potential of this crucial Affiliated Organization of ICOM whose main vision is a world where the role of artists and the contribution of museums, collections, and archives of modern and contemporary art to the cultural, social and economic well-being of society is recognized and respected.
