Decolonization in museums: New perspectives on ownership, custodianship and restitution
At its last General Conference, ICOM devoted a session to decolonization that signalled a paradigm shift in museums towards participatory approaches, community empowerment and relationship building. Museums are increasingly engaged in relationship building with Indigenous peoples and other source communities, leading to a variety of arrangements for custodianship, shared responsibility, and restitution. The panel will focus on the changing formulations of how collections are held for public benefit and helping to reinvent the museum for the 21st century.
